In House Community Counsels of the Year Awards

Welcome to the latest edition of Asian-mena Counsel, magazine for the In-House Community along the New Silk Road. [Read Here]

In May, we celebrated our In-House Community Counsels of the Year, and rising to the challenges created by travel restrictions and social distancing, we did so in our first ever ‘e-Ceremony’. Members of the community from around the world joiuned us ‘live-online’ for the one-hour event. We provide a written review of proceedings along with a round-up of the winners and their virtues in this issue.

We also talk to Iain MacDonald, the Lloyd’s Register general counsel for Asia, Middle East and Africa about the challenges of his role, the in-house position under Covid-19 and legal podcasts. Ronald Yu writes about how the pandemic has exposed confusing inconsistencies in privacy laws, and once again highlights the need to scrutinise AI, while Dewi Savitri Reni and Greita Anggraeni of SSEK discuss Indonesia’s new tax on imported digital goods and services.

Elsewhere we feature: Travel restrictions, work permit and visa status of expats in the Philippines, by Hannah Lizette S Manalili of ACCRALAW; Release of long-awaited guidance on Competition Law in Vietnam by Tran Cong Quoc of bizconsult Law Firm; and Offshore 2020 — themes and trends, by Richard Hall of Conyers.

In our Spotlight on collections, investigations and audit, Erick Gunawan of Law In Order discusses information governance.

Finally, in the Briefing section we cover the latest moves and jobs and take a closer look at how Reliance Jio Platforms raised US$10 billion from Facebook and other investors during the height of the pandemic…Read more
